The Transformers franchise has inspired several iterations and forms over the years, from toys, movies and comics to cartoons and video games. Now, the series is inspiring real-life fans to "transform and roll out" on their own two feet.
Dubbed the "Race for Cybertron," a new event in Malaysia showcases the lengths of the Transformers fandom. Challenging flesh creatures to test their lack of metal in a race of endurance, the event has several prizes and titles tied to the robots in disguise. It also takes place as Transformers celebrates its 40th anniversary, showcasing that franchise strength is a long-distance race indeed.
Taking place on Oct. 19, 2024, in Putrajaya, Malaysia, the Transformers Night Run 2024 "Race for Cybertron" event will be a test of fancy footwork. The event will be held from 5 p.m. (local time) onward, with participants of the sporting events being able to choose between representing the Autobots or the Decepticons. This includes being awarded with race kits sporting the faction symbols of either allegiance. Other items include themed bibs and medals for completing the race, with these designed to resemble either Optimus Prime or Megatron.
There will be four different classes of races based on the ages of the participants. The Kids Dash (4-7 years old) is 800 meters, while the Kids Dash (8-12 years old) is 1.2 thousand meters. The Fun Run (13 years old and above) is 5 km, whereas the Competitive Race (16 years old and above) is an entire 10 km race. Needless to say, there will be plenty of fun to be had for Transformers fans of all ages and factions, with would-be robots in Malaysia certain to prove in October that racing is the right of all sentient beings. Tickets are on sale now, with the most expensive (for the Competitive race) costing 85 Malaysian Ringgit (~US$18). Frugal athletes will therefore only need a bit of money, a little energon and a lot of luck.
Transformers isn't the only franchise to have themed races and sporting events, but it's the first such event to occur in Malaysia. The fact that it takes place there of all places, instead of North America or Japan, speaks volumes to how the brand has become a massive success across the world. This mainstream popularity can be tied to the live-action Transformers movies, not to mention the other forms that the series has taken in the past several years. With animation and toys in particular, Transformers has had numerous collaborations, especially with well-known brands in Asia.
Currently, the robots in disguise are turning 40 years old, and various new cross-brand collabs are on the way. That's along with other forms of merchandise and the release of the upcoming movie Transformers One. There was even a recent screening of the pilot episode of the 1980s Transformers cartoon, with all manner of events celebrating the series throughout the year. Compared to other robot franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam, it has the most universal appeal across the globe.
Transformersis a mediafranchiseproduced by American toy company Hasbro and Japanese toy company Takara Tomy. It primarily follows the heroic Autobots and the villainous Decepticons, two alien robot factions at war that can transform into other forms, such as vehicles and animals.
